Private and small-group guided tours in the Burren and West of Ireland

John Mc Grath
Founder & Tour Guide
I’m John, founder of The Hidden West. I was born and raised in Kilfenora, on family farmland that has been lived on for over 400 years. That kind of continuity shapes how you see a place. The land isn’t just scenery - it holds memory, story, and a way of life that’s still unfolding. Growing up here, I developed a deep connection to the landscape of the West - its stone walls, its quiet fields, its history layered just beneath the surface. Over time, that grew into a lasting interest in archaeology, local heritage, and, just as importantly, the people who carry these traditions forward. Travel has also been an important part of my life. Spending time in other parts of the world gave me a real appreciation for what it means to arrive somewhere new and to be welcomed in - not just shown around, but helped to understand a place more deeply. That’s what led me to create The Hidden West. The experiences I offer are small, personal, and shaped by the place itself. They’re not about covering ground or ticking off sites, but about taking the time to notice - to hear the stories, meet the people, and understand something of the rhythm of life here. Whether we’re walking through the Burren, visiting an ancient site, or sitting with a local musician, my aim is always the same: to offer a genuine sense of connection to the land, its history, and the community that continues to shape it. This is the place I come from, and it’s a privilege to share it in a way that feels meaningful and true.

REVIEWS

"My grandmother emigrated from Clare in 1951 and spent her whole life talking about the West with a longing I never fully understood — until John took us there. I had come half-hoping to find a townland name on a map. What I found instead was a guide who helped me feel the weight and texture of that place in a way I will carry for the rest of my life. John listened to everything I told him about my family and wove it naturally into every stop we made. He didn't just show us the West. He helped us understand why people who left it could never quite leave it behind. My grandmother would have wept. So did I."

"As someone who works in environmental conservation, I am always alert to whether a tour company's sustainability values are genuine or cosmetic. With The Hidden West, they are absolutely genuine. John has a deep and visible reverence for this landscape — not as a backdrop for tourism, but as a living ecosystem and a cultural inheritance that must be cared for. The small group size meant the experience was intimate and unhurried."

"I have been on dozens of cultural tours across Europe and I can say without hesitation that The Hidden West is in a category of its own. John has an extraordinary gift — he speaks about this landscape with the ease of someone who has never needed to learn it, because it is simply part of who he is. On our last evening he brought us to a session in a village pub that wasn't in any tourist listing. Within an hour we were singing songs we had never heard before and feeling, somehow, entirely at home. My daughter, who is seventeen and very hard to impress, declared it the best night of her life. That says everything."

"We came on this trip thinking we knew something about Ireland. John dismantled that assumption completely - and we are so grateful he did. In two days he walked us through megalithic tombs, read the land like a living book, and shared stories that no guidebook has ever carried. At one point he paused beside a stone wall and told us it had been built by his own ancestors, four hundred years ago. You cannot manufacture that kind of connection. This is not a tour. It is an education in belonging, delivered by someone who embodies it."
